Everyone talks about the ideal client, the buyer persona, or the customer avatar… But do you actually know why it’s so crucial, and more importantly, how it tangibly impacts your business?
I asked myself the same thing for a long time. Honestly, I was tired of hearing about it! But to understand why your target audience matters, let me ask you one simple question.
What sounds easier to you: convincing a massive crowd or talking to just one person?
Imagine you’re on a stage in front of 100 people. You have to give a speech about a topic you’re passionate about. Do you really think you can captivate everyone AND get every single person to agree with you? Spoiler alert: it’s impossible.
Now, imagine you’re face-to-face with just one person. They share your values, your vision, and your ambitions. Can you convince them? Much more easily, right?
That is the secret to effective communication: it is far easier to move someone who resonates with your message than to shout at a random crowd of 100 strangers.
If you speak to 100 people, your message will inevitably be generic. It becomes blurry, and in the end, no one feels truly concerned.
In a world flooded with information, our brains automatically filter out anything that doesn’t speak to us directly. To exist, you must speak to one person.
Someone who shares your vision and values.
Someone for whom your product or service is the perfect solution.
Someone whose life you can truly change or simplify.
Knowing your target client inside out ensures your message reaches the right ears. If you don’t speak to them specifically, they won’t even know you exist. You can’t be the “miracle solution” for everyone—and that’s a good thing!
Refining your positioning also means defining your ideal anti-client. This is the person you absolutely do not want to serve (due to a lack of affinity, conflicting values, or mismatched needs).
Defining this anti-persona helps you sharpen your message both ways: you know exactly what to say to attract the right profiles, and what to say to repel those who aren’t a fit.
Defining your ideal client is a challenge, which is why I offer Brand Strategy Coaching. Together, we break down your audience to build rock-solid foundations.
I always offer this coaching before creating a visual identity, because it is essential to know who you’re talking to before you start designing.
